Method

Garlic Lurpak® Plant Based
1
Preheat the oven to 150°C/160°C fan/gas mark 3.
2
Slice of the top of the garlic bulbs.
3
Generously grease the inside of a large sheet of foil with some of the Lurpak® Plant Based.
4
Smear the remaining Lurpak® Plant Based over the garlic bulbs. Add thyme, salt, and pepper.
5
Place the bulbs into the centre of the foil. Close the foil to form a small parcel and bake in the oven for 50 minutes until the garlic is soft and translucent. When cooked, set aside to cool.
6
Once cooled, squeeze the soft garlic cloves out of their skins and mix them back into the melted Lurpak® Plant Based in the foil to create garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based to spread over the dough later.
Bread
1
Mix all the dry ingredients, herbs, and lemon in a large bowl.
2
Make a well in the centre of the flour and slowly add 300ml water. Use your hands to combine the mixture to form a sticky dough ball. Set aside for 10-15 minutes.
3
Knead by stretching the dough back and forth for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and silky and loses its stickiness. Place in a new bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave to prove for about 1 hour. The dough should double in size.
Plaiting the bread
1
Knock the dough back and tip onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a large rectangle about 45cm x 30cm.
2
Working on the long side, generously spread the garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based over the dough. Save a little bit to glaze over the baked bread.
3
Roll the dough into a long sausage. Cut the sausages into 2. Carefully cut each sausage in half lengthways; you should have 4 lengths of dough. This will expose the interior with layers of garlic Lurpak® Plant Based.
4
Position two lengths of dough horizontally, parallel to each other, with some space in between. Position the other two lengths vertically, parallel to each other, overlapping the horizontal lengths to form a cross or grid. Fold the top vertical length over the closest horizontal length. Fold the horizontal length that is now on top over the next vertical length. Repeat this pattern of overlapping and folding until all lengths are intertwined. Press the ends together to secure the plait.
5
Carefully transfer the dough onto a lined baking sheet. Glaze with beaten egg and leave to prove for another 30 minutes.
6
Preheat the oven to 180°C/190°C fan/gas mark 5.
7
Bake the bread in the middle of the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and well-risen.
8
Brush with the remaining garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based.

Embrace the joy of baking with our garlic bread. With a golden crust and each bite revealing layers of soft, aromatic dough infused with roasted garlic and fresh herbs, this bread is luxurious and irresistible. Crush your expectations with this delicious combination of fresh herbs, lemon, and garlic baked to perfection in Lurpak® Plant Based, creating a soft and fragrant garlic bread layered with the complexity of roasted garlic and fresh garden herbs.

Roasted garlic with plant-based spreadable and fresh herbs

Roasting garlic mellows its pungency, turning it into a sweet, caramelised treat that blends beautifully with Lurpak® Plant Based. This plant-based spread, infused with thyme, salt, and pepper, captures the essence of simplicity and richness. Rosemary, sage, thyme, and parsley add a vibrant, fresh flavour, while lemon zest weaves a subtle brightness through the dough, making every slice a perfect harmony of flavours and textures. As it bakes, your kitchen fills with the mouth-watering aroma of garlic and herbs, promising a delightful eating experience that makes it hard to wait.

Inside-out and plaited for the best flavours

This garlic bread is a celebration of flavours and textures, crafted to delight both eyes and palate. Turning all the goodness inside-out, you get the garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based generously spread throughout the dough, creating layers of flavour revealed with each bite. Each twist and turn of the plait reveals the rich blend of roasted garlic, fresh herbs, and a hint of lemon, giving you a perfect view of bright green herbs from the outside. This method takes the texture from simple to glorious, giving the bread a crispy, golden exterior that goes beyond your expectations with a soft, flavourful interior.

Beautiful to serve for every occasion

Bake up a visually stunning garlic bread plait which adds a touch of sophistication and a burst of flavour and aroma to any mains and sides. For example, serve this fragrant bread alongside a classic Italian meal; the robust flavour of garlic and herbs complements dishes such as spaghetti carbonara and Bolognese. On a charcuterie board, the garlicky punch pairs beautifully with sharp cheddar, creamy brie, and an assortment of olives and cured meats. For a lighter touch, enjoy it with a crisp, fresh salad with as many colours as possible from tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and whatever else you fancy to complement the beautiful bread plait.

You can also serve the garlic bread as a side to our pasta with roast butternut squash, pesto lasagne with sweet potato, or spinach and ricotta ravioli.

Experiment with the recipe

Instead of plaiting the bread, you can make a garlic bread twist. After rolling the dough into a large rectangle and spreading it with the garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based, roll it into a long sausage shape and cut it into two equal lengths instead of four. Take each length and twist it several times along its length to create a spiral effect. Position the two twisted lengths side by side on a lined baking sheet and twist them around each other to form a single, larger twist. This will give you a beautiful bread twist with a different but beautiful look compared to the plait.

Up the indulgence by turning it into a garlic and Parmesan loaf. After spreading the garlic-infused butter and roasted garlic cloves over the rolled-out dough, sprinkle a generous amount of grated Pamesan cheese evenly over the surface. Continue with the bread recipe as usual. Then, after brushing the loaf with beaten egg, you can sprinkle it with a little more grated Parmesan. The cheese on top will create a delicious, golden crust in the oven.
