Method
Garlic Lurpak® Plant Based
1
Preheat the oven to 150°C/160°C fan/gas mark 3.
2
Slice of the top of the garlic bulbs.
3
Generously grease the inside of a large sheet of foil with some of the Lurpak® Plant Based.
4
Smear the remaining Lurpak® Plant Based over the garlic bulbs. Add thyme, salt, and pepper.
5
Place the bulbs into the centre of the foil. Close the foil to form a small parcel and bake in the oven for 50 minutes until the garlic is soft and translucent. When cooked, set aside to cool.
6
Once cooled, squeeze the soft garlic cloves out of their skins and mix them back into the melted Lurpak® Plant Based in the foil to create garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based to spread over the dough later.
Bread
1
Mix all the dry ingredients, herbs, and lemon in a large bowl.
2
Make a well in the centre of the flour and slowly add 300ml water. Use your hands to combine the mixture to form a sticky dough ball. Set aside for 10-15 minutes.
3
Knead by stretching the dough back and forth for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and silky and loses its stickiness. Place in a new bowl, cover with a tea towel and leave to prove for about 1 hour. The dough should double in size.
Plaiting the bread
1
Knock the dough back and tip onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a large rectangle about 45cm x 30cm.
2
Working on the long side, generously spread the garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based over the dough. Save a little bit to glaze over the baked bread.
3
Roll the dough into a long sausage. Cut the sausages into 2. Carefully cut each sausage in half lengthways; you should have 4 lengths of dough. This will expose the interior with layers of garlic Lurpak® Plant Based.
4
Position two lengths of dough horizontally, parallel to each other, with some space in between. Position the other two lengths vertically, parallel to each other, overlapping the horizontal lengths to form a cross or grid. Fold the top vertical length over the closest horizontal length. Fold the horizontal length that is now on top over the next vertical length. Repeat this pattern of overlapping and folding until all lengths are intertwined. Press the ends together to secure the plait.
5
Carefully transfer the dough onto a lined baking sheet. Glaze with beaten egg and leave to prove for another 30 minutes.
6
Preheat the oven to 180°C/190°C fan/gas mark 5.
7
Bake the bread in the middle of the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and well-risen.
8
Brush with the remaining garlic-infused Lurpak® Plant Based.
