Method

1
Preheat a large, deep-sided pan with a lid over medium heat. Add half the Lurpak® butter and the garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add the mussels, then shake the pan so they are covered in the garlic butter.
TIP
Tap any mussels that are open before cooking. If they do not close after a light tap, discard them as this indicates they are dead and not safe to eat. Similarly, after cooking, discard any that have not opened.
2
Place the lid on the pan and cook the mussels for 5 to 8 minutes or until they all have opened.
TIP
Make sure the lid is tight-fitting to keep the steam trapped inside the pan. This helps the mussels cook evenly and open up properly.
3
Remove from the heat and add the lemon zest, lemon juice, parsley, and remaining Lurpak® butter. Give the mussels a final shake and serve immediately with crusty French bread.

Infused with aromatic garlic, zesty lemon, and fresh parsley

The mussels are first cooked with garlic and butter, then infused with lemon and parsley, which enrich their natural sweetness and oceanic notes. The garlic imparts a deep, aromatic taste that melds seamlessly into the tender mussels. The zest and juice of fresh lemons add a bright, citrusy sparkle, complementing the mussels’ inherent aroma without overshadowing it.

Fresh parsley adds a final touch of herbal freshness, beautifully uniting all the flavours. The butter creates a rich sauce that perfectly coats the tender mussels. With Lurpak in hand, you are well on your way to creating a simple but undeniably delectable seafood treat.

Discover perfect pairings for mussels

When it comes to enjoying mussels, pairing them with the right accompaniments makes all the difference. Beyond the classic crusty French bread, a light pasta, perhaps a linguine tossed with olive oil and a hint of chilli, makes for a satisfying match. If you are in the mood for greens, a simple rocket salad dressed in lemon vinaigrette can mirror the zesty, fresh seafood flavours exquisitely.

Also, try them with saffron rice and a selection of grilled vegetables. The saffron rice is a subtle and aromatic choice that complements the natural sweetness of the mussels. Each grain carries a hint of saffron’s exotic, slightly earthy flavour, adding a touch of luxury and a warm golden colour. Serve a mix of grilled vegetables alongside. Red peppers, courgette, and aubergine work wonderfully for this. Just brush them with a bit of olive oil and grill until they are nicely charred.

Put your mark on it

Want to put your mark on this recipe for mussels? Consider experimenting with flavours and textures that reflect your personal taste.

Instead of parsley, try tarragon, which adds a subtle anise flavour that complements the mussels, or thyme for an earthy note. You can also play with the heat level and introduce a bit of crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of cayenne pepper, adding a nice little kick to the taste.

If you are aiming for a more aromatic experience, swap out the lemon for other types of citrus fruits. Try using lime if you are aiming for a sharper tang or orange for a gentler, sweeter note. And for those who love a creamy sauce, stir in some cream or a dollop of crème fraiche right before serving for an irresistibly silky and decadent taste.
