The journey to make high quality butter starts on the farm,
and our farming is becoming more sustainable every year.
Rooted in four key focus areas (milk quality and food safety, animal welfare,
climate and nature, people), we have implemented a wide range of
programmes that are currently improving sustainability standards across
farms that produce milk for LURPAK.
PRIORITISING ANIMAL WELFARE
Quality butter starts with quality welfare, which is why animal wellbeing is the highest priority for our farmers and for LURPAK as a business. Every farmer that we work with is committed and held accountable for the health and wellbeing of every single cow. This is measured across four key indicators (cows with good body condition, mobile cows, clean cows, and cows without injury) and reported on two times a year with third party auditing every three years.
CONDUCTING REGULAR FARMAHEAD™ CHECKS
Our farmer owners work with external agricultural climate advisors to conduct annual climate checks on their farms. Measured across over 200 points, our FarmAhead™ Checks help farmers to identify the best areas to reduce the carbon footprint and improve nature on their own farm. When collated, this data shares a very accurate and detailed picture of what’s really happening across all farms and is an essential part of our overall company target to reduce our CO₂e footprint by 30% by 2030* and become carbon net zero by 2050**.
INCENTIVISING SUSTAINABLE CHANGE: FARMAHEAD™ INCENTIVE
In an industry-leading scheme, our FarmAhead™ Incentive pays our farmer owners more money for their milk if they adopt and implement a variety of sustainable practices on their farms. This includes initiatives such as using more sustainable feed for dairy cattle, switching to renewable electricity on the farm, and improving biodiversity through actions such as permanent grassland and continuous plant cover.
SUSTAINABILITY IN OUR DIARY
Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop with our farms, it extends into our dairy. All of LURPAK is made exclusively from Danish milk and the vast majority is produced at our dairy in Holstebro. Once the milk reaches our dairy, we use sustainable and efficient methods to get the maximum out of every litre. From using more renewable energy, via re-using excess water, to avoiding product waste where-ever possible, we are constantly striving to produce quality butter in an even more sustainable way.
