Cook, you could go classic with the flavours of a traditional omelette. But why not elevate your omelette with a twist and try cooking up this dish with chopsticks and some jaw-dropping dexterity? Bring out your pan, beat the eggs, and twist your tornado omelette. This is how you master a memorable breakfast, brunch, or lunch, and cook up a storm. It starts right here.

Method

1
Beat eggs until well combined. Dissolve the cornflour in a small bowl with a tablespoon of water and mix it into the eggs with salt. Leave them to settle for 10 minutes.
TIP
To get the right flavour, control the heat when melting butter in the pan. Do not let it brown, as this will change the flavour as well as the colour of the tornado omelette. And you want that stunning yellow that beautifully complements the extraordinary shape. To get it, beat and mix the egg yolks and whites well, making the yellow bright and even, without any white stripes. If you are serving more than one omelette, prepare the eggs you need before you start, preferably in different bowls so you use the right amount of egg mixture for each omelette. Also, make sure to gently melt a new batch of butter before cooking each omelette.
2
Melt butter in a non-stick frying pan. Pour in the egg mixture and wait 15 seconds for the bottom to set.
3
Get the chopsticks and drag two sides of the omelette into the centre. Keep the chopsticks still and with your other hand, turn the panhandle. This will twist the omelette into a tornado shape. Leave for another 30 seconds for the omelette to set. Let the top be a little runny, so the omelette will be soft when serving as it will continue to set after you remove it from the heat.
4
Serve right away.

Questions about tornado omelettes

Tornado omelettes are pleasing both in taste and look. It is a beautiful breakfast dish, shaking up a classic with its visually pleasing presentation. Keep reading below to learn more about our easy tornado omelette recipe.

  • A tornado omelette is quite simply a classic omelette twirled into a tornado-like shape. It is also known as a Korean tornado omelette, explaining its origin and why the traditional way of creating its characteristic shape is with the use of chopsticks. The twisted shape adds to its popularity, making it a visually impressive way to serve a classic dish. Despite its fancy looks, you use only a few simple ingredients, and it is simpler than it looks to create its beautiful shape.
  • Prepare an egg mixture as you usually do for omelettes, but let it sit for 10 minutes before you start cooking it. This improves the texture, making it more tender, and firms it up a bit so it is easier to shape. Melt butter, making sure it does not brown, and add the egg mixture. Wait 15 seconds without touching it until the bottom sets, then use a pair of chopsticks to drag the omelette into the centre from two sides. Then, keep the chopsticks still while turning the pan using the handle and twisting the omelette gently into the tornado shape. Leave it in its shape for 30 seconds to let it set before gently lifting it onto a plate and serve.
  • Chopsticks are normally used for making a tornado omelette, but if you prefer to use something else, try two thin spatulas or, if you are careful not to scrape the bottom of the pan, two forks. If you have two utensils, whether it be chopsticks or something else, you can lift and swirl the eggs to create the characteristic shape. Choosing utensils as thin and small as possible will make it easier to make the correct shape.
  • For breakfast, it is perfect on its own served with a cup of coffee or glass of juice on the side. Serve the traditional variation with rice and drizzled with soy sauce or spicy sauce for a heartier meal for lunch. Make a bed of rice, moulded into a mound or dome on a plate, then add the omelette on top, being careful not to ruin the tornado shape. Enjoy the twisting, cook.
